Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Rooted Ritual Hair Oil on keratin-treated hair?

Rooted Ritual Hair Oil is made with plant oils and whole-herb infusions and does not contain sulfates or harsh cleansing agents.

Keratin treatments and their aftercare requirements can vary, so follow the waiting period and care instructions provided by your stylist. Once you're cleared to resume your usual hair-care routine, you can incorporate Rooted Ritual Hair Oil as a pre-shampoo scalp oil.

Is Rooted Ritual Hair Oil safe for color-treated hair?

Rooted Ritual Hair Oil contains no added bleaching or colouring agents.

Because colour treatments, hair condition and aftercare requirements vary, we recommend following your stylist's instructions and patch testing before introducing a new product. Once you're ready, use Rooted Ritual Hair Oil as part of your pre-shampoo hair-oiling ritual.

Why is scalp massage part of the ritual?

Scalp massage is at the heart of traditional hair oiling.

Taking 5 to 10 minutes to gently massage helps distribute the oil across your scalp while turning hair care into a moment to slow down, reconnect and care for yourself- not just your hair.

How should I use Rooted Ritual Hair Oil?

Warm a small amount between your fingertips or gently warm the oil before application.

Working section by section, apply a small amount directly to your scalp. Using your fingertips, gently massage for 5–10 minutes, then work a little through the lengths of your hair if desired.

Leave on for at least 15 minutes, or longer if preferred, then shampoo thoroughly. Depending on your hair and the amount used, more than one shampoo cleanse may be helpful.

How often should I use the oil?

Start with once a week and see what works for your hair and scalp.

Some people may enjoy oiling more frequently, while others may prefer an occasional ritual. Find the rhythm that feels right for you.

Can I leave it on overnight?

Yes! You can leave the oil on longer if that works well for your hair and scalp, including overnight.

Just remember: this is thick, oily, gooey goodness- not a leave-in serum. It can transfer onto your pillowcase. I personally use a 100% cotton pillow cover or place a small cotton cloth over my pillow to protect it overnight.

If you're new to hair oiling, start with a shorter pre-shampoo treatment and see what works best for your hair and scalp.

And however long you leave it on, don't skip the massage- that's part of the ritual.

Will the oil make my hair greasy?

Yes- before you wash it out!

Rooted Ritual Hair Oil is a rich, traditional rinse-out hair oil, not a leave-in serum.

Apply it before shampooing, focusing first on your scalp and then distributing a little through your lengths if desired. Shampoo thoroughly afterward; a second cleanse may be helpful depending on how much oil you use and your hair type.

Is it suitable for all hair types?

Hair oiling can be adapted for straight, wavy, curly and coily hair.

The amount and frequency that feel right will vary from person to person, so we recommend starting small and adjusting based on your own hair and scalp.

Why does my hair oil become solid?

Rooted Ritual Hair Oil contains oils that naturally become more solid in cooler temperatures. This is completely normal.

Place the tightly closed bottle in warm water until the oil liquefies again. This change in texture does not mean your oil has gone bad.

Is the oil scented?

Rooted Ritual Hair Oil contains no added fragrance.

What you smell is the natural aroma of the oils and whole herbs used in the infusion. Because we're working with botanical ingredients, you may notice subtle natural variation from batch to batch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to patch test?

Yes. We recommend patch testing before your first full application, particularly if you have sensitive skin or are introducing a new product to your routine.
